Membre du jury du Festival de Cannes en 2023, Maryam Touzani a débuté sa carrière en tant quejournaliste. Son premier documentaire, Sous ma vieille peau, fut consacré à la prostitution au Maroc, et elle va dans la foulée participer à l’écriture du scénario de Much Loved, long-métrage de son époux, Nabil Ayouch, qui a pour protagonistes quatre prostituées. Son premier long-métrage, Adam, qui fut le candidat du Maroc aux Oscars, traitait de grossesse hors mariages et était sélectionné dans la section Un certain regard du Festival de Cannes. C’est dans cette même compétition que concouru Le bleu du caftan, avec Joyland qui reçut le Prix du jury et la Queer palm. La réalisatrice choisit pour son actrice principale Lubna Azabal, avec qui
