It's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
Au milieu des années 1950, Joseph Losey choisit de quitter les États-Unis, victime de la chasse aux sorcières alors opérée par le sénateur Joseph McCarthy. Il tourne ainsi son premier film avec Dirk Bogarde, et lui fait lire The servant, de Robin Maugham, neveu de l'écrivain William Somerset Maugham. Huit ans plus tard, il terminait le tournage d’Eva quand Bogarde lui apprit qu’un scénario du roman avait été écrit par Harold Pinter. Les réunions de travail commencent afin de mettre en branle le projet, et de nombreux obstacles commencent à poindre. Pinter a peur que ses écrits soient affadis par les ajouts de Losey, tandis qu’un conseiller de Bogarde craint de le faire travailler dans un film au sous-texte homosexuel. Après moult tractations, le long-métrage est présenté au Festival de Venise, et la collaboration entre Losey et Pinter se prolongera avec Accident et Le messager, celle du
