Lost in translation
Dès son premier long-métrage, Wong Kar-wai s’est fait connaître du Festival de Cannes en participant à la Semaine de la critique. Prolifique au début des années 1990, il revient sur la Croisette, cette fois-ci en Compétition officielle avec Happy together, qui y décroche le Prix de la mise en scène. Pour écrire son scénario, le réalisateur hongkongais s’est librement inspiré d’un roman de l’écrivain homosexuel argentin Manuel Puig, qui avait été adapté une décennie plus tôt avec une autre de ses œuvres, Le baiser de la femme araignée. Pour son équipe technique, il s’entoure de son fidèle directeur de la photographie, Christopher Doyle, qui l’accompagnera encore longtemps et contribuera à la reconnaissance d’une certaine signature esthétique du metteur en scène.
