Les origines de The grandmaster se retrouvent paradoxalement en Argentine, à la fin des années 1990. Là, Wong Kar Waï tourne Happy together, qui lui valu le Prix de la mise en scène au Festival de Cannes, quand il lit un article de journal consacré à Bruce Lee. Intrigué par la notoriété toujours vivace de cet acteur dont il a vu les films quand il était petit, il se met à préparer un film consacré à l’acteur sino-américain et se renseigne sur son enfance et la façon dont il a été éduqué aux arts martiaux. C’est ainsi qu’il tombe sur des références à Ip Man, célèbre maître qui a initié la vedette. Sa vie inspira d’autant plus le réalisateur de Hong-Kong qu’elle lui permettait de pouvoir raconter par son biais une certaine histoire de la Chine,
