Il semblerait que l’écriture d’Il était une fois à Hollywood soit concomitante avec celle du scénario du film qui en a été tiré. Avec malice, Quentin Tarantino évite de dire que le roman n’est qu’une simple version romancée de son long-métrage, racontant qu’il a mis cinq ans à l’écrire. Du reste, plusieurs passages y sont inclus, qui ne figuraient pas dans la version cinématographique, et certains personnages ont été ajoutés, tels Candice Bergen ou bien Aldo Ray. Sans compter la fin des deux œuvres, qui, sans vouloir divulgâcher, n’est pas la même. Au-delà du fait que Tarantino prétend ne plus vouloir être réalisateur mais se consacrer à son activité de romancier, on ne peut que constater son implication dans le projet.
