À l'âge de 25 ans, elle a publié le best-seller du New York Times, UNORTHODOX : The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots (Simon and Schuster, 2012).

Summary :

Discover Unorthodox, the autobiographical story of Deborah Feldman, a young Jewish woman who fled her religious background and inspired the NETFLIX series of the same name.

From the moment she felt that fragile little being in her arms, Deborah Feldman knew what she had to do. At just 19 years old, she has always lived in the Satmar Hasidic community. She has always followed the relentless principles that govern the smallest details of her life: what she can wear, who she can talk to... All principles except the one about not reading literature. The stolen reading moments of her childhood, spent discovering the proud, independent paper beings of Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott, have made her want to discover another life, amidst the skyscrapers of Manhattan.

She knows it's time to escape her dysfunctional marriage to a man she barely knows, to abandon her responsibilities as a Satmar maid and to give in to her desires. Regardless of the obstacles, it's time for her and her son to find the path to happiness and freedom.

My review :

I would like to thank HLAB and the Netgalley website for allowing me to read this book.

This book inspired a series on Netflix of the same name.

The author, Deborah Feldman, is 19 years old and has a son living in the Satmar Hasidic community. She has always respected what she was taught: what to wear, who to talk to, except that she could not read literature. The time she spent reading on the sly made her want to explore the skyscrapers of Manhattan.

She wants to run away from a marriage where she doesn't even know the man. She wants to end her famous Satmar responsibilities and be free with her son by her side.

A book I read in one sitting so much I was hooked on the story so gripping, addictive, captivating, full of suspense and twists and turns with endearing characters. I love the author's writing.
