Lizzy Mercier Descloux a connu une trajectoire morcelée qui l’a conduite de l’école des Beaux-Arts à New-York, des Halles de Paris au CBGB, célèbre club qui a vu naître la scène post-punk américaine. Là, elle a côtoyé les membres de Blondie, Patti Smith, Richard Hell, ou bien encore le peintre Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Sa chanson la plus célèbre s’intitule Mais où sont passées les gazelles ?, parue en 1984 chez ZE Records, et aurait pu être estampillée « world music » si l’étiquette avait existé à l’époque, ce qui n’est pas le cas. Lizzy Mercier Descloux est à l’avant-garde, le morceau ne détonne même pas dans sa discographie tant l’artiste s’est appliquée à toucher à tout : post-punk, new-wave, simili-variété.
