5 Social Skills Frameworks for Navigating Emotional Hijacks


Have you ever thought that one is only knocked around by emotions, rather than being able to manage them? This is what Emotional Hijack means, it is a feeling that overcomes our rational self and gains control of our intelligence. But what if we told you that you can regulate them and prevent yourself from going for an emotional spin?

By incorporating these frameworks into your life, you can unlearn the cognitive bias, resulting in reduced inclination of an emotional hijack and instead, default your decisions to rational thinking. Well then, let’s get right into it and find out these five tools that can dramatically improve your life.


Framework 1: The STOP Method

The first way of dealing with emotional hijacks is controlling your thoughts and therefore taking control of your emotions. The STOP method is an easy-to-understand and implements a technique that does just that.


S – Stop: Remember that you are about to experience an emotional response, and now consciously avoid it. This is why it is so important to learn how to recognize that you are becoming hijacked and must stop. This can be quite tasking, nevertheless, it becomes quite easy to decipher once it is done severally.


T – Take a breath: Deep and calm breath for a few moments. This might only take a few seconds, but it can help you focus on what is at hand and not be distracted by the other things that you trust to get done. It also helps to count ‘to five’ as one inhales and ‘to five’ as one exhales again. The following breathing exercise
