How the Right to inform is being assassinated

Democracy passes through the fourth power and that is the information of the press and not by a communication tool. The journalists are the first whistleblowers because their job is precisely to investigate and expose what otherwise would remain unknown without their pen or their microphone. The list of affairs is endless! From the 1971 ‘Urba’ scandal relating to the conditions of the attribution of contracts for public market offers in relation to the hidden financing of the Parti Socialiste, to the affair of the so-called “sniffer planes”, to the phone tapping at the Presidential Palace, to the ‘Carrefour du Développement’ (Crossroads of Development), to the personal enrichment and fake jobs at the MNEF, to the ‘contaminated blood’ scandal, to the scandal at Elf, or even the one of the bank Crédit Lyonnais, the list of the illegal and illicit practices in our country is infinite and knowledge about these scandals has only been made possible thanks to those journalists and the independent media claiming that their profession is to inform the general public.

This being said, some scandals are not published, either because the media acknowledge a lack of interest because of news issues however another explanation was given at the beginning of 2018 by La Tribune as far as the French press is concerned: " In 2017, the total amount of the French state aid towards the written press was worth between €580 million and €1.8 billion. The wide range being justified by a “large definition” of aid to the media ".

RT International channel in February 2017 invited me to discuss the freedom of the press and the freedom of expression. I explained that 95% of the French media belong to a handful ofbillionaires whose first business is the sale of arms and weapons, public building and works or even telecommunications sectors. What is the interest for billionaires, captains of industry to invest in media, which lose enormous amounts of money, whilst these businessmen are both very clever and very well advised? Could “A Certain Press” be an independent press, which is not controlled by the ‘connectivity’ and would give free speech to the citizens allowing the highlight of the content of the message rather than focusing on the messenger?

However even if the journalists in their vast majority do their work, most of the media employing them are not ‘independent’, or they enjoy ‘connectivity’, which seems to be more powerful than the freedom of the information. The journalists who are victims of the dependency of their employer on the finance, on the political power of any company are also assassinated, just like whistleblowers.

In each scandal that makes the headlines, it turns out that some people, including journalists, knew and kept silent. The fact that some scandals are voluntarily hidden from the grand public shows the degree of compromise, the non-ethics of the information business. In France, one sometimes wonder whether some media voluntarily forget to impose to their journalists the respect of the Munich Charter, the document that lists the main duties and rights of the journalists, which is the European reference, adopted in 1971 by the International Federation of Journalist and most of the European unions as far as journalism compliance in concerned.
