Quand il marque son territoire, le castor émet un produit appelé castoréum. Ce produit est utilisé en parfumerie et même en alimentation avec la mention "saveur naturelle de vanille ". Il est secrété par une glande proche du pénis et de l'anus du castor. C'est mieux que les crottes de castors (voir l'article précédent).
