That was always your thing
Not mine
Your sons', your friends', even my brother’s
But I was always different
It took you long years to understand
Though I seemed to have taken quite a liking
In staying quiet and staying still
I did not appreciate holding the rod
Nor that smelly herring in the tin
Nor was I ever keen
To bash a fish’s head
On a wooden boat
That was always your end of the coat
Not mine
I've no great salmon story to boast
Never gave a single thrust
In the Scottish summer rains
And boy did I hate these dull weekends
We would spend at the river cabin
When it was always all about fishing
And then a pint of Guinness at the inn
I still resent
These muddy welly boots
And the soaking overalls
