A few words about the author :
Andrew Taylor (b. 1951) is a British author of mysteries. Born in East Anglia, he attended university at Cambridge before getting an MA in library sciences from University College London. His first novel, Caroline Miniscule (1982), a modern-day treasure hunt starring history student William Dougal, began an eight-book series and won Taylor wide critical acclaim. He has written several other thriller series, most notably the eight Lydmouthbooks, which begin with An Air That Kills (1994).
His other novels include The Office of the Dead (2000) and The American Boy (2003), both of which won the Crime Writers’ Association of Britain’s Ellis Peters Historical Dagger award, making Taylor the only author to receive the prize twice. His Roth trilogy, which has been published in omnibus form as Requiem for an Angel (2002), was adapted by the UK’s ITV for its television show Fallen Angel. Taylor’s most recent novel is the historical thriller The Scent of Death (2013).

What this family has lost in wealth, they seem to have gained in secrets... In this new America of death, everything can be bought and sold. Even honor and respectability. A great historical thriller, winner of the prestigious Ellis Peters Dagger Award.

Depuis le temps que je voulais lire ce livre, voilà qui est fait.
L'histoire se déroule en août 1778 à New-York. Un gentilhomme est retrouvé poignardé en pleine rue. C'était un officier criblé de dettes et un amateur de jeux de hasard et d'argent. La ville étant en construction, il y a pas mal de soldats, de traitres et de rebelles et comme il y a une justice sommaire et expéditive. Un vagabond est pendu pour le meurtre du gentilhomme. Mais Edward Savill trouve que cela a été vite expédié. Il va se poser des questions sur les liens entre la victime, le juge Wintour, sa femme malade et leur fille.
J'ai accroché de suite à l'histoire si prenante, captivante, addictive, remplie de suspens et de rebondissements avec des personnages attachants.

Since I've been wanting to read this book for so long, it's done.
The story takes place in August 1778 in New York City. A gentleman is found stabbed in the street. He was an officer riddled with debt and a gambling enthusiast. The city being under construction, there are a lot of soldiers, traitors and rebels and as there is a summary and expeditious justice. A vagrant is hanged for the murder of the gentleman. But Edward Savill finds that it was quickly dispatched. He will wonder about the links between the victim, Judge Wintour, his sick wife and their daughter.
I immediately hooked on to the story, which is so gripping, captivating, addictive, full of suspense and twists and turns with endearing characters.
