If "Journalism is a fundamental service to democracy" (as you can read above), given indeed journalism would be one of the ways to serve The Rule of Law among others which aim to recall and respect Human Rights generally speaking, I don't think Julian Assange name can be registered in such a category almost idealistic especially now when experience teaches us disinformation-misinformation power and then a serious regression for any democracy or State within people can live free and in security. No need to claim mass media or mainstream (why not social media ?) as scapegoat: propaganda, cyber one for example, is factually a weapon any hacker or robber can use since getting information does not guarantee its spread (on the contrary, any control tends to hide truth and tell the opposite). Privacy as secrecy category is then threaten by those who criticize any power but peculiarly not the free speech one which is yet accountability (you can say anything, instead you defame). Words matter, as Justice matters; and truth begins with discourse or speech as reference either to reality or fantasy, as either sincerity or lie. LIARS today appear daily more and more on the political and worldwide stage.
