Try to meet people.
1. Do not look for houses in places with high human traffic.
When choosing between a hotel or B&B you get the opportunity to become a part of everyday life of the country and interact with its inhabitants.
2. Learn some local terms.
In some cases, your doctor may speak little English and even though it is quite helpful to know some of the languages, the least you can do is learn some simple phrases so that you can explain yourself and sometimes start the interaction with the person you meet.
