Novostella Smart Flush Mount Ceiling LED Light Review
The Novostella Smart Ceiling light was fun to review. The concept of having a bright 24W ceiling light for one of our bedrooms or even the office was a great way to bring some fun into the home. In addition, the color lights respond to sound or music! This could be lots of fun. The Novostella Smart LED Ceiling light is equipped with a 24 W white base light with an 8W LED RGB strip light around the base. The Novostella Smart Ceiling light is priced right now for $41.99 (USD) + a $10 coupon at the time of the article (Lunar Holiday). However, it is regularly priced at $59.99 on amazon.com.
Novostella Smart Ceiling Light Features
Smart Life App helps you manage 16 Million Colors and a Bright Ceiling
We talk about the Smart Life App from Tuya frequently. It seems that Tuya has improved over the years. The app allows you to tune the white to soft (yellow) or cooler whites (white-blue) with a thumb scroll. The Novostella Ceiling Light shows up as 'NICE Smart Ceiling Light.' Wonder if this has anything to do with the NICE parent company that owns smart home automation maker Fibaro.
The Tuya Smart Home App allows you to switch controls for White, Color, different scenes, and the chance to respond to music in the room.
I love the response to the music. Even as I'm typing up this review - the LED lights are changing and responding to the clicks of my mechanical keyboard. It could be fun for a gaming room or even the office when you're working during the night. Unfortunately, the lights change to different colors by default - you can't pick one or just a couple of lights; It does not seem that you can program the colors that light up during sound at the moment, but it would be great if it could happen in the future. Govee, Novostella's competitor, has programmable lights based on different sound output and rhythms.
Google Home and Alexa Integration
Integration into the Google Home and Alexa smart home ecosystem is quite simple once you add the Novostella Smart Ceiling light to the Tuya Smart Life App. You can change colors with the Google Home app; however, once there is a slight bit of color, Novostella's programming takes over and turns off the white ceiling light for the color LED to turn on.
The Brightest White is 2400 Lumens
I can see the Novostella Ceiling light as a good hallway light, office light, or a light that you would have to compliment a pair or number of lights in a bedroom. 2400 Lumens is bright. However, if it is the primary light in the room, it's not going to brighten up a space that is 10 ft x 13 ft. It's probably going to light up a much smaller room. The light is bright. The output is focused straight out from the base, so the light does not spread away into the rest of the room.
Novostella Ceiling Light Setup is simple and easy.
The Novostella Ceiling light comes with the hardware to install the light into ceilings or walls. The Novostella Smart Ceiling light is made of plastic, which makes it lightweight and easy to lift above your head to install. The standard hole fittings are spaced to fit in most receptacles.
The base is installed first with the Black and White wire. There is no ground connection required (the light is primarily plastic.) Once the base is installed, the ceiling light conveniently twists and connects to two leads built into the bottom of the ceiling light. Turning the Novostella Ceiling light into the base takes less than 20 seconds.
What I liked about the Novostella Ceiling Light
- The Novostella Smart Ceiling light is easy to install. There are two lead plugs. You put the wires into the snap connections, and you have the power within a few seconds.
- The Smart Life app is so easy to use. You can schedule the color lights to change during different times of the day or schedule the white light to turn on and off whenever you want. Integrate into Google, and you've got a responsive night or party light in the house.
What I don't like about the Novostella Smart Ceiling light.
- I would love to install this light in my home, but it's not CSA or UL rated. I have already thought about so many applications for this light. I want it in my office, my stairwell, in my kid's room. It's a fun light to have in the home. I can't install something that has not been tested in a lab for safety.
- The output (2400 lumens) for the Novostella needs to be a bit brighter. It works as an excellent concentrated spotlight in a room. It would also compliment other lights in a room, but I don't think it could be the only light in the room, unless specifically for reading, bedtimes (night light), or stairways. Maybe it needs to be wider than 12 inches in diameter - maybe 18 inches to make a significant brightness in the room.
Novostella Smart Flush Mount Ceiling LED Light
The Novostella Smart Ceiling light is excellent to illuminate hallways and stairs. It can be mounted vertically along walls or mounted above on ceilings. For a price of $41.99, you're getting value compared to wall lights that you would get at the hardware store. The fun LED color lighting responding to music is a great feature. I wish the Novostella Smart Light could be installed in my home safely. However, its currently missing the UL or CSA stamp. It's a great light that I want to install in my office, stairwells, and hallways. I have many smart home ideas to make this light respond to smart home automation triggers. The Novostella Smart Ceiling light has been fun to test out and review.
