Summary :

After The Symphony of Chance, Douglas Kennedy offers us a sensual, delicate, nostalgic work about thwarted love, the destiny we forge for ourselves and the regrets that can mark out our existence. It is also her declaration of love to Paris, the city of all possibilities and all reinventions.

Before Isabelle, I knew nothing about sex.
Before Isabelle, I knew nothing about freedom.
Before Isabelle, I knew nothing about life.

Paris, early 1970s.
In a bookshop on the Left Bank, a young man meets a woman. He is American, a student, penniless, and has left everything behind to fulfill his fantasies of the City of Light; she is French, a little older, sophisticated, mysterious and... married.

Between Sam and Isabelle, it's love at first sight.

A tumultuous affair begins, with feverish happy hours, furtive rendezvous and stolen moments. But Sam wants more. Isabelle has opened the doors to another life for him, but is she ready to sacrifice everything to him? Will passion be able to resist the daily grind, the trials and tribulations and the passage of time?

My review :

I would like to thank Belfond and the Netgalley website for allowing me to read this book, my first by this author, I love his writing.

The story takes place in Paris in the early 1970s where Sam meets Isabelle in a bookstore on the Left Bank. He has just arrived from the United States and is a student with no money. As for Isabelle, she is French and older than him. From the first glance it is love at first sight between them except that she is married. They will have an affair based on furtive meetings but Sam wants more but will Isabelle be able to give him more?

A book read in one sitting so I was immediately hooked on the story so gripping, captivating, addictive, filled with suspense and twists and turns with very endearing characters.
